Training for BER assessors

The Building Energy Rating (BER) assessment business is a growing industry in Ireland, with many people training as BER assessors to meet the demand.

Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) is the issuing authority with responsibility for the registration of BER assessors.

According to the SEI, in order to obtain a BER, a homeowner must have an assessment carried out by a certified BER assessor who is trained under the National Framework of Qualifications and registered with SEI.

Steps to becoming a BER assessor
There are a range of BER assessor training courses to meet the demand for interest in this new profession. However, a career as a BER assessor is somewhat limited to those who already have a construction background.

BER training course applicants must have, according to SEI, an “appropriate construction related qualification, at least a Level 6 Award (Advanced Certificate/Higher Certificate) in construction studies or other cognate discipline or equivalent. Equivalence may be determined as a combination of an appropriate construction-related qualification and significant relevant experience.”

To become a BER assessor, individuals must first complete a recognised training programme, pass the national BER exam for dwellings, accept the Code of Conduct for BER Assessors and register with SEI.

Choosing a BER training course
Individuals who wish to train as a BER assessor are advised to examine and compare courses offered by different training providers as they can vary significantly.

It is also recommended that course applicants enquire about how long they will have to wait on certification on successful completion of a course as BER assessors require a certificate to register with SEI.
